Advancing Parkinson’s Care in Our Rural Community

For individuals in rural communities, access to specialized Parkinson’s care is often limited. Mitchell County Hospital Health Systems continues its commitment to support our local communities by increasing services needed right here at home. Physical Therapists Amber Krier and Amber Corpstein recently completed a two-day Parkinson Wellness Recovery (PWR!) certification workshop, enhancing their ability to provide specialized care for individuals with Parkinson’s disease (PD).

This certification focuses on addressing key PD symptoms, including rigidity, bradykinesia (slowness of movement), incoordination, and reduced self-awareness, through targeted strategies designed to improve mobility and overall function.

Through this advanced training, Krier and Corpstein have developed skills in improving posture, weight shifting, spinal mobility, and functional transitions, all of which are critical for maintaining independence and enhancing quality of life. By tailoring therapeutic exercises to each patient’s specific needs and ability level, they can help individuals with Parkinson’s perform daily activities more efficiently and safely.

“We are very excited for the dynamic approach this program offers versus more rigid protocols we have previously been accustomed to,” states Amber Krier, Rehabilitation Services Director. “I can’t wait to see the long term positive impact this program has for the individuals in our community. Our goal with PWR! is to allow people with Parkinson's to remain as functional and independent for as long as possible.”

Krier and Corpstein’s PWR! Certifications allow patients the ability to receive evidence-based interventions close to home, eliminating the need for extensive travel to seek expert care. This ensures that local patients receive the highest level of support to stay active, independent, and engaged in their daily lives.
